PMR Fellowships in Religion, Ethics and Medicine

Program on Medicine and Religion (PMR) Fellows pursue research or educational initiatives at the intersection of religion, ethics and medicine. Those selected as PMR Fellows could propose a series of quarterly workshops on a topic of their interest, or propose a one-quarter commitment for a self-designed, for-credit course at the University of Chicago (course will be sponsored through Center for Health and the Social Sciences but can be cross-listed as appropriate). For those submitting applications for a pilot research grant, a brief description of the research project in religion, ethics and medicine could also be submitted for consideration.

Examples of Activities by PMR Fellows:

PMR Fellows can request funding for the following activities:

  • $1500-$3000 for workshop/conference proposals
  • $5000 for self-designed course in the University (must apply at least two quarters in advance and submit draft syllabus)
  • $1000-$5000 for research pilot grants

Applicant Eligibility:

Applicants must be enrolled and in good standing in a graduate-level program (MA, MDiv, PhD, MD) in the Pritzker School of Medicine, Divinity School, or any of the Divisions of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Biological Sciences at the University of Chicago. Applications will also be considered from licensed practitioners in health care (Social Work, Health Care Chaplaincy) at the University of Chicago Medicine. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Priority will be given to applicants with a formal affiliation at the University of Chicago, but applicants from other institutions may also be considered (especially for research pilot grants). Those proposing workshops/courses as PMR Fellows must be doctoral students/candidates at the University of Chicago.
