Islam and Biomedicine
Multidisciplinary Symposium and Organ Donation IntensiveSept 8-10, 2018
Gordon Center, University of Chicago
Aims
By bringing together an international cohort of academicians, clinicians, and Islamic seminarians, this symposium and workshop aims to fill a major lacuna within academic discourse on the scholastic traditions of Islam and the human sciences.
The symposium, sponsored by the Templeton Foundation and co-organized in collaboration with the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, will focus on:
-
The relationships between Islamic theology and metaphysics on the one hand, and biomedicine on the other
-
How theological and metaphysical constructs within Islam interfere with the science and practice of medicine
The workshop, supported by the Chicago Muslim Medical Alliance, will provide an in-depth conceptual introduction to the Islamic perspectives on the organ donation debate and will examine:
-
The practical and theological ethics of organ donation in Muslim contexts and from an Islamic perspective
-
Cover key concepts within Islamic theology, law and ethical frameworks as they relate to bioethics
